Brian Ross was a Partner in the Litigation group in the Vancouver office of Miller Thomson LLP. He joined the firm as an associate in 1971 and became a partner in 1974. As a senior partner, Brian acted as general counsel to clients in matters related to insurance, construction, personal injury, corporate and commercial litigation. In particular, Brian has extensive experience acting in major and complex matters involving litigation on behalf of and in defence of insurance companies and their insureds. Brian has also represented Plaintiffs in personal injury litigation, construction litigation and medical malpractice suits. As a result, he is well versed in all areas of insurance coverage and liability issues such as construction, professional errors and omissions, negligence, product, occupiers' and social host liability and personal injury claims. He has appeared many times at all levels of court in BC and in 2007 he was successful in the Supreme Court of Canada. He has participated in hundreds of mediations as counsel and since 2007 has conducted many mediations as Mediator.
When not representing clients in the courtroom or in mediations, Brian was active in a variety of professional and community endeavours and has lectured for Continuing Legal Education and insurance companies on a number of topics. He is a former managing partner of Miller Thomson LLP (1988-1991) and was head of the firm's Vancouver office Insurance Law Practice Group Group and co-chaired the firm's National Insurance Law Practice Group. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Multinational Association of Law Firms (Multilaw), an association of some 65 independent law firms in 150 commercial centres around the world comprising approximately 6,000 lawyers.
From 2007 to 2010, he was mentioned in Lexpert as a leading practitioner in his practice area of Litigation and Commercial Insurance, and was recognized by National Post Best Lawyers in Canada: Insurance Law.
Brian is a graduate of the University of Calgary (B.A., 1967) and obtained his law degree from the University of British Columbia (LL.B., 1970). He is a past Chair of the International Law Committee of the Defense Research Institute. Mr. Ross is a retired member of the Law Society of British Columbia, and former member of the Insurance, Construction, Civil Litigation, and Alternate Dispute Resolution sections of the Canadian Bar Association, B.C. Branch.
